2020 Patagonia Case Competition
Teammates: Kat Lee, Gitanjali Chandel, Stephanie Ulman
The focus for this year’s competition was eliminating Patagonia’s pre- and post-consumer textile waste.
How can Patagonia work with various stakeholders to eliminate textile waste in its apparel production?
How can Patagonia encourage people to make environmentally-responsible decisions and buy only what they truly need?
How can Patagonia replicate these solutions throughout the entire apparel industry?
The Solution: Reroute
After research, interviews, ideation, and multiple iterations, my team proposed the following innovation concept:
Reroute is an ecosystem of pre-suading consumer behavioral change that occurs throughout the lifetime of a product by priming people to make more sustainable choices.
Encourage mindful shopping and provide receipts that show the environmental & monetary costs.
Repair, refresh and resale of garments are promoted as primary options at the front of stores and with the main clothing search results. Refreshing garments is a pivotal option that uses previously wasted textile scraps and creates unique and valuable add-ons (patches, pockets, etc.) to prevent boredom with currently owned clothing and add value to garments later in their lifecycle.
Anniversary emails of clothing purchases influence customers to keep their clothing longer and/or trade in the product. Emotional attachment to clothing is strengthened through an adventure log feature for account holders allowing a user to compile a short record of the adventures and memories their clothes have helped to create.

Storyboard of autonomous Goodyear concept.

We proposed an autonomous concept for the future of Goodyear services.
We proposed making all services completely autonomous – no overhead costs of physical buildings. Customers use an app to request Goodyear services at any specified location. A circulating autonomous service vehicle holding tools will meet a mechanic professional at the specified location of servicing. An autonomous Goodyear fleet truck is then ready to transport the tires.
In this model, Goodyear customers find themselves gaining autonomy in their life without the need to visit service centers inconveniently, and Goodyear is at the forefront of autonomous services as a strategic business opportunity.
